Obituary

Velma Jean (Hatch) Surry, 83, was born on November 9, 1939, in Uniontown, Alabama. She was the oldest of the 10 children of Richard and Annie Hatch. Velma passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023, at home with her loved ones.

She was employed and later retired from IPFW after 32 years as a custodian. She loved spending time with her daughters and grandchildren and the Luv-A-Lot Daycare babies. She loved to play Bingo. She loved listening to Gospel and Blues music. She loved to “dress to impress.” She enjoyed going on trips and she stayed ready to make all moves that would keep her on the go.

Velma leaves to cherish her forever memory, her daughter, Valerie D. Surry, goddaughters, Colena R. Gonzalez, and Gwendolyn Poindexter, grandchildren, Kenneth E. Watts, II, Jordan I. Watts, Amari S. Watts and Teresa C. Shepard, her sisters, Louise Robinson, Sabrina Brown, and brother, Arlie (Vivian) Hatch, a special nephew, Richard Hatch, and her best friend, Alice Hall, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Annie Hatch, six siblings, Susie Basset, Elizabeth Jones, Lois Tarver, Victor Hatch, Richard Hatch, Jr., and Ernest Hatch.
