Roosevelt Hawkins, Sr.

April 13, 1932 ~ January 9, 2022 (age 89)

Obituary

Roosevelt Hawkins, Sr. was born in Pine City, Arkansas to Robert Hawkins, Sr. and Birdie Lee Gibson on Wednesday, April 13, 1932.

He married the love of his life, Odessa Wilder, on October 31, 1958; and, they renewed their vows on November 17, 2004.  From this union, they moved Odessa’s family (one group at a time) from Arkansas to Fort Wayne into a two-family home on 2135 S. Hanna Street to continue the family’s journey of gaining generational wealth. They were also blessed to have four boys and one girl. They opened their home and their restaurant business to feed those who were hungry and needed shelter.

Roosevelt loved traveling, fishing, cooking, and spending time with his family. He supported his children in all their endeavors. He loved being around his grandchildren.  One would always find him with a smile on his face.  He was a man of few words, but his presence was known, respected, loved, and appreciated.

Roosevelt took great care of his family.  His work history began with the Hobby House, KFC, and Bob Haley.  He retired from General Motors in Defiance, Ohio after 29 years of employment.

There’s so much to be said of Roosevelt. Every family member and friend has experienced their own relationship with him. Everyone will say, “I would always get a smile from him.”

Roosevelt transitioned on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at home surrounded by several family members.

Left here to cherish his loving memory and to carry on his legacy are his wife, Odessa Hawkins of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his daughters, Paula Annette (Roy) Arnie of Lancaster, CA and Deshone Hawkins of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his sons, Roosevelt (Felicia) Hawkins, Jr. of Goodyear Arizona, Michael (Lindetta) Hawkins of Muncie, Indiana, Marvin Hawkins of Stuttgart, Arkansas, Shelton (Katrise) Hawkins of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his sisters Georgia Butler and Susan Kelsaw-Graham both of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his brother Robert Hawkins, Jr. of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his adopted sister, Reather Winfield of Fort Wayne, Indiana; 19 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
