Raymond Leonard Williams

Raymond L. Williams, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born on April 19, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, Raymond was one of eight cherished children born to Vernon Williams Sr. and Maggie (Watson) Williams.

Raymond graduated from Wendell Phillips High School, the first predominantly African American high school in Chicago, where he participated in the band and excelled in track and field. As a young man, he worked in the family's business, Willie and Sons Economy Grocery. He later pursued studies in mortuary science and devoted several years of service as a mortician, helping families through some of life's most difficult moments.

Raymond met the love of his life, Jacqueline Louise Williams, at a jazz club in Chicago. United by their shared love of music, the two enjoyed spending time together on the dance floor, especially two-step dancing. Together, they shared 63 years of marriage and memories until Jacqueline's passing on August 13, 2022.

Throughout his career, Raymond discovered a natural talent for sales. His professional journey included selling many products from insurance, Wonder Bread and encyclopedias to Amway and flooring. He ultimately built a successful career in the flooring industry, retiring from John Klopfenstein Furniture & Flooring located in Leo, Indiana. Never one to sit still, Raymond later pursued an interest in real estate during his retirement years.

Raymond approached every aspect of life with determination

and an unwavering work ethic. He believed that hard work was the foundation of success and held himself—and often those around him—to high standards. His tenacity, perseverance, and sense of personal responsibility shaped the way he lived and worked. While he could be demanding at times, those who knew him best understood that his expectations came from a deep belief in doing one's best and following through on commitments. One of his favorite sayings was, “If you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all.”

Raymond was also a devoted servant of Jehovah and a faithful member of the Jehovah's Witnesses congregation. He found great joy in sharing the good news of God's Kingdom and attending conventions and assemblies throughout the Midwest, where he formed lasting friendships.

Those who knew Raymond will remember his dry wit, infectious laugh, rich singing voice, and love of cooking (and eating). His legacy of faith and resilience will continue to inspire those who loved him.

Raymond is survived by his daughters, Joy Williams Penson, Margo (David) Williams Hubbard, and Michele Foote; his son, Chad Williams; his sister, Barbara Ratliff; his brothers, Ronnie Williams and Harry Williams; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jacqueline Louise Williams; his parents, Vernon Williams Sr. and Maggie Williams; and his brothers, Vernon Williams Jr., Alphonso Williams, David Williams, and Clarence Williams.

A memorial service celebrating Raymond's life will be held at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Maplecrest Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 11181 State Road 37 East, New Haven, Indiana 46774. The service will also be available via Zoom, Meeting ID: 85251515200, Passcode: 602110.
