Ramona Chinita Johnson

Ramona “Mona” Davis was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, to Savanah Cook. She was a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose life was defined by her love for family and her devotion to caring for others.

While traveling throughout the country, Mona met Lawrence “Larry” Davis Sr., who would become the love of her life. The two married in 1975, and together they made Fort Wayne, Indiana their home. They shared more than 46 years of marriage and built a family filled with love and memories. Larry was Mona’s greatest love, and their life together was an important part of the woman she became.

Mona was a dedicated and hardworking woman who took pride in her work and in providing for her family. Throughout her career, she worked in a variety of roles, including positions with GTE, Parkview, and Flash Fold. She later retired as a Beauty Consultant with Walgreens, where her warm personality and ability to connect with people made her a natural fit for serving and helping others.

Mona was a devoted mother to Chinita Gordon (Gary Gordon), Gregory Johnson Sr., Charnetta Johnson, Chinetta Davis (Henry Williams), and Lawrence Davis Jr. (Erin Horton). She took tremendous pride in her children and grandchildren and considered being a mother and grandmother among the greatest blessings of her life.

Her grandchildren held a particularly special place in her heart. Mona celebrated their accomplishments, supported their dreams, encouraged them, and took great pride in watching them grow. She was equally devoted to her great-grandchildren and found great joy in caring for and spending time with them.

Mona had a special love for children. She was the family babysitter—the person trusted to care for the children she loved. Her home became a refuge for her nieces and nephews when they were growing up. It was a place where they could eat, laugh, play, be themselves, and feel safe and loved. Children in the neighborhood also knew and loved Mona for the warmth and care she showed them.

Her devotion to children and family remained with her until the very end. She was caring for her great-grandchild when she passed, a fitting reflection of the love and care she had given to children throughout her life.

Mona was known for her kind and generous heart, her strength, and her strong personality. She was never afraid to speak her mind or stand up for the people she loved. She was deeply sensitive, fiercely loyal, and devoted to the people who mattered most to her.

One piece of wisdom that became especially meaningful to Mona came from her son, who reminded her to “control what you can control.” Those words helped her tremendously and became a source of strength and perspective as she navigated life’s challenges.

Mona leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, generosity, and countless memories. Her family will remember her for the love she gave, the children she cared for, the people she encouraged, and the many lives she touched throughout her life.

Mona leaves to cherish her memory her children, Chinita Gordon (Gary Gordon), Gregory Johnson Sr., Charnetta Johnson, Chinetta Davis (Henry Williams), and Lawrence Davis Jr. (Erin Horton); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother, Dan Cook; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends who were blessed to know and love her.

Preceded in Death

Mona was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence “Larry” Davis Sr.; her mother, Savanah Cook; her sisters, Dorothy and Grace; and six grandchildren.

Mona’s life touched many, and her memory will continue to live on through the family she loved so deeply and the many people who were fortunate enough to know her.

She was deeply loved; she will be deeply missed, and she will never be forgotten.
