Phyllis Jessup was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, and later made her home in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Chatard High School and went on to study music composition at Marian College in Indianapolis and the University of Louisville, where her love of music and the arts continued to grow.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Columbia Cecilia Jessup and John Robert Williams; her sister, Barbara Coats; and her stepfather, Hurschel Jessup. The youngest of seven siblings, Phyllis is survived by her beloved daughter, Amber Jessup; her two sisters, Ann C. (Birdsong) Hyde and Sherrian M. (Birdsong) Gant; and her three brothers, James G. Birdsong Jr., Louis A. Birdsong, and Edgar L. Birdsong.
Phyllis was a deeply creative soul who brought words to life through storytelling, expressing herself through writing, song, and drawing. She shared her experiences with friends and family, offering pieces of her inner world with imagination and heart. Her creativity and intelligence left a lasting impression on those who knew her well.
On Saturday, January 3, 2026, Phyllis took her last breath, leaving behind a legacy of artistry, imagination, and love.
She was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church on October 2, 1967, at the age of eight, by Reverend Francis VanBenten.
Memorial services will be held in the Indianapolis area. Details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
