Mattie Warren was born on June 16, 1937, to Eli Powell and Mattie Fikes-Powell in Uniontown, Alabama. She accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Shady Grove Baptist Church. She graduated from Perry County Training School. She loved the Lord. She had a personal relationship with Christ. Mattie was a prayer warrior and a woman of faith. She lived a long, beautiful life. In her earlier years, she served as an usher and in the culinary department at Jerusalem Baptist Church. She loved to volunteer and prepare dinners to support different ministries. Mattie was a member at Southern Heights Baptist Church, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, under the current leadership of Pastor Omari Parker.
Mattie married the love of her life, David Warren, on July 25, 1969, and shortly after they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she continued to give God His glory as a proud housekeeper from 1970 until she retired in 1996.
To know Mattie was to know love. She opened her heart in a way like no other. Mattie always made everyone feel special. She never met a stranger. She wore many hats. “Mom”, “God mom”, and “Tee-Tee Mom”. She was affectionately known by her grandchildren as “Grandma”, “Gee-Gee Baby”, and “Poppi”. She loved spending time with her family, and she adored her grandchildren. Mattie loved traveling, especially the bus trips with her friends, and playing games with her family; “Nothing like a good game of Rummy or a Spade game. “Mattie loved to cook for her family and was known for her dressing, gumbo, pig’s feet, and yellow rice.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband; David Warren, four of her children; Ben C. Powell, Annette Hamler, Margaree Hamler, Robert L. Hamler, ten siblings; Edna Mason, Thelma Strother, Mary Leonard, Mammie Powell, Hattie Powell, Henry Powell, Ben Powell, Theodis Powell, Joe Powell, Eli Powell.
Mattie leaves two daughters and one son to cherish her memory; Christa Hamler-Harris, Tamara Shears, and Michael (Amy) Warren, sons by love; Leon Harris and James Shears, six grandchildren; Jessica Harris, Ashley Hides, Mikaela Warren, Kamden Warren, Kiarra Warren, and Aaliyah Shears, God daughters; Kathleen Lynch, Elizabeth Brabson, and Robin Stinson, five great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews.
