Mattie Will Knight was born on March 10, 1945, in New Brunswick, New Jersey to the late
Juanita and James Ivey. She went home to be with the Lord on August 16, 2022.
She spent much of her childhood in Columbus, Mississippi until the family moved to Gary,
Indiana. It was here where she would later marry and begin a family. Although she was a
devoted and loving housewife and mother, she was only married for a few short years.
She moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1972. As a single mother, she was determined to find a job in order to
provide for her children, so she eventually found a job working for General Electric (GE). After
she left GE, she worked for Lincoln Life Insurance Company for approximately 15 years before
moving on to Parker-Hannifin. She retired from Parker in 2008.
Mattie enjoyed spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed when her daughter and
son, who both live out of state, came home because she loved having all of her children home at the
same time. She, like most mothers, loved to cook for her children anytime they came home and
her grandchildren whenever they came over to visit. After all, what child would not want Mom
to prepare a home-cooked meal.
Although, she was small in stature, Mattie could do many things around the house that would be
considered “man’s work”. She owned tools that you would not find in most women’s homes. She
could make simple repairs as well as more complex repairs.
In, addition to being a “handywoman” around the house, she enjoyed gardening and working in
the yard. She took pride in keeping her yard and flower beds looking nice.
Preceding her in death were her parents, a younger brother James Ivey, a younger sister Minnie
Lee Ivey, and a son Kenneth Knight.
To cherish her memory, she leaves behind a daughter Cassandra Knight of Severn, Maryland;
three sons, Eric (Linda) Knight of Fort Wayne, Calvin (Toyah) Knight of Spanaway,
Washington, and Courtney (Ja-Leesa) Stroud of Fort Wayne. She also leaves behind a sister
Catherlene Pearson of Fort Wayne, 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great
grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other family members and
friends.
