A Brief Sketch of Life
Mattie B. Gunn-Hyde was born on December 28, 1934, to James and Lillie Fisher in Greenwood, Mississippi. Mattie departed this life on July 26, 2024, at home amongst family and friends in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Mattie relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1953 to assist her first cousin, Limuel Coats Sr., with raising his children following his wife’s passing. Throughout the years, Mattie remained close with her extended, beloved “Coats” family.
Mattie had a strong belief in God. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a long-time member of True Love Missionary Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and would often be found reading her Bible and singing hymns both at home and at church.
Many years before her health began to fail, Mattie regularly volunteered at the Church’s kitchen feeding the homeless; she was also a dedicated Prayer Warrior and a regular attendee of weekly prayer meeting and Bible study. Moreover, Mattie served as a member on the Church Mother’s Board and one of the original members of the Gospel Chorale Choir.
Mattie was a homemaker. She cared for and instilled the importance of God in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for welcoming everyone into her home and providing a meal. Mattie served as a Foster Parent for many years assisting children in need. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, attending church and visiting with friends. Mattie was a jewel to all those who knew her; she oftentimes left a memorable mark on individual’s lives with her words.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Gunn; her daughter, Patricia Davis; her son, Ronnie Hall; her parents, and all of her siblings.
Mattie leaves to cherish her two daughters, Beverly Hollins and Jacquelyn Jones both of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sons, Donald (Teresa) and Charles (Danielle) Hall of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Goddaughter, April Scott of Indianapolis, Indiana, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
