Galen Buckner Obituary

Galen Vernell “Baba” Buckner was born February 27, 1972 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Margaret Vaughn Cowart and raised by both, Margaret and stepfather Webbie “Pop” Cowart. He was baptized at an early age by pastor Samuel Brooks at Bethany Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Galen graduated from Thomas Carr Howe High School in 1990 and Ivy Tech Community College in 2001. Later in 2001, he moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana to be with the love of his life, Kyra, where they joined Imani Baptist Temple under the leadership of Bishop Bill McGill. Galen was employed at Edy’s Grand Ice Cream in Fort Wayne, Indiana for 23 and a half years.

He was a loyal member of The Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles, Meridian Lodge #33, PHA, Constantine Consistory #25, Persian Temple #46 A.E.A.O.N.M.S.

Galen was a founding member of the PHAT Boyz Social Club, an avid drummer, and a die-hard Raider’s fan. 

Galen leaves to cherish his wife of 22 years, Kyra Woods-Buckner; daughters: Kailen Buckner, Dondrea Davis, Breona Davis, and granddaughter Aaliyah of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Mother Margaret Vaughn Cowart of Indianapolis, Indiana; Mothers-in-laws, Maxine and Eracine Coats of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Father-in-law, Tony Woods, Brother, Kelly (Angela) Buckner,of Louisville, Kentucky; Brothers-in-law, Robert (Angela) Stephens of Indianapolis, Indiana, and  Limuel (Valinda) Woods of Charleston, West Virginia; Sisters-in-law, Shandrika (Angelo) Bryant-Williams of Columbus, Ohio, and Erricka Wash of Fort Wayne, Indiana; God sons, Dallas Irby, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Anthony Carr II of Indianapolis, Indiana; Best friend, Anthony “Tony” Carr of Indianapolis, Indiana. He also leaves special cousins: Yvette Perry-Fancher, Cecilia Posley, Barbara Perry-Smith, and Tina Hambrick; GVP posse: Tyrone “Peewee” Carr, Steve Lowrey, Robert “Butchie” Mann, Bryon Dismuke, Donald Wallace, Tony Richmond, Reuben Boyd, Mike Crawdiss, Chris Basley and a host of bonus daughters, bonus sons, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  

Galen was preceded in death by his father,

George Harper; stepfather, Webbie Cowart; Aunt, Barbara Perry; cousin, Phyllis Perry; and friend, Courtney Meredith.
