Frances McCrary, 84, passed away on April 10, 2026, at home. Born in Jeffersonville, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Retha (Emory) Stephens and the late Columbus Stephens, Jr.
Frances joined Turner Chapel AME Church in the late 1950s under the leadership of Reverend H. D. Saunders. She graduated from Central High School in Fort Wayne, IN. Frances was joined in holy matrimony to the late Gene U. “Sonny” McCrary on October 20, 1972. To this union, three children were born, Sonya, Tiffany, and Brian. Frances loved music, books, and shopping at thrift stores. Frances loved the color red and was often seen wearing red clothing.
Surviving Frances, are her son, Brian (Kawanya) Muhammad; step-children, Teresa McCrary, Evangeline McCrary, and Gene McCrary, Jr.; granddaughters, Kamari Green-Williams and Kayin Muhammad; brother, Columbus Stephens, of Bridgeton, NJ; sisters, Bernice Johnson of Fort Wayne, IN, Josephine (Larry) Williams of Detroit, MI, and Jeanette Stephens-EL of Miami, FL; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her daughters, Sonya Naazir and Tiffany McCrary; sister, Dorothy Johnson; brothers, John, Jack, Wade, Richard, and Lewis; and brothers-in-law, Walter Johnson and James Johnson; and nephews, Walter “Tony” Johnson and David Johnson.
