Caheen Paul "Moonie" Murphy, Sr.

Caheen P. Murphy Sr., affectionately known to friends and family as "Moonie," age 92, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026.

Born in Marion, Alabama, on April 20, 1934, to his loving parents Collie and Isabella Murphy, Moonie was no stranger to hard work, being brought up on a farm where he learned the values of dedication and resilience early in life. As a young man, he migrated north to Fort Wayne, Indiana, finding opportunity during the city's historic industrial boom. There, he established a long, distinguished career with General Electric, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. Most importantly, it was in Fort Wayne where he met the absolute love of his life, Joanna.

Deeply rooted in his faith, Moonie was a devoted and faithful church member who served his congregation in countless ways throughout his life. Over the years, he gave his time generously—from driving the Sunday school bus and teaching Sunday school lessons, to meticulously managing the church finances and serving with distinction as a church deacon.

He remained a passionate lifelong farmer with a remarkable green thumb, famously capable of growing all kinds of vegetables, raising cattle, and tending to his farm-raised catfish.

When he wasn't working the land or serving his church, Moonie brought immense energy to those around him through his love of sports. An avid golfer, he could frequently be found out on the greens or cheering passionately for his favorite teams. Whether he was rooting for the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians, or shouting "Roll Tide" for his beloved Alabama, his enthusiasm for the game was a central part of his vibrant personality.

Above all, Moonie was devoted to his family. He shared a beautiful, enduring love story with his wife, Joanna, to whom he was married for 72 exceptional years. Together, they built a legacy rooted in love, faith, and a tireless work ethic. As the family grew, Moonie found absolute joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, holding a deep and proud love for them and cherishing every moment they spent together. He also held a very special place in his heart for his many nieces and nephews, who brought great joy to his life.

Moonie held a deeply special place in his heart for the dedicated individuals who blessed his final years: James Hogue, his trusted farm manager; Linda Harden, his compassionate caregiver; his great-nephew, Ernest "Bungee" Essex, who selflessly handled all of his "heavy lifting"; and his niece, Twyla Williams, who shared precious family moments with him during his last months and days on earth.

His legacy will live on through his beloved wife, Joanna; his three sons, Caheen (Chauncey), Martin (Karen), and Michael (Patricia); and his brother, James "Pee Wee". He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of loving nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends in both Indiana and Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Collie and Isabella Murphy, and his siblings, Collie "Bud" (Ida), Geneva, Allie "Lute", John "Ervin", Lois, and Dock Joe (Cookie).
